The Religious Centre
The Monash University Religious Centre was opened in June 1968. TheClayton campus of Monash University is one of the few Australian University campuses with a freestanding Religious Centre. The Religious Centre is a multi-faith centre that symbolises the centrality of the spiritual dimension to university life. In an effort to encompass all religious affiliations and denominations, while maintaining an arena conducive to the liturgy of the main traditions practised at the Centre, the architect chose a circular design free of overtly religious imagery. In the Main Chapel, for instance, there are no Christian statues and symbols, except for a large removable cross. The stained glass windows evoke a church atmosphere, but are abstract in design and without religious embellishment. The Centre is a place for private prayer, reflection and solitude. It is also used regularly in occasions of joy such as weddings and christenings and also for times of reflection at funerals and memorial services. The Religious Centre is a place for the diverse multi-cultural community of Monash University. It is used for group activities, celebration and unity - a place where its members can find stillness or solitude. If you would like more information about hiring the Religious Centre and its availability for weddings and other ceremonies, please contact the Religious Centre Secretary on (03) 9905-3156. |
