Government Income Support (Centrelink)Centrelink's purpose is to assist people to become more self sufficient, while supporting those in need. A growing number of Centrelink's student services are available through online self service. To find out more, visit the Centrelink website. Youth Allowance (Under 25 years) Austudy (Over 25 years)The Youth Allowance/Austudy payment is the main form of government administered assistance. This is available (on a means-tested basis) to full-time (or at least 75% full load) students. Youth Allowance/Austudy makes a difference in many students' lives, so take the time to ask at the Student Financial Aid office or Centrelink for more information. AbstudyAbstudy is a form of government assistance available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This program depends on the type of study and is administered by Centrelink on a means-tested basis. Newstart AllowanceThe Newstart Allowance (available through Centrelink) is designed to help people looking for work. Part-time students (over 21 years old) may be eligible. Full time students are not eligible. This is not a living allowance for students, and Centrelink needs to be satisfied that the applicant is indeed looking for work.
