Advanced Equal Opportunity Training: From Theory to Practice

These workshop are open to staff and managers  interested in having a better understanding of their obligations under legislation and University policy. Staff will be introduced to the University’s Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Grievance Procedures and empowered to respond appropriately when complex issues arise.

Participants will be provided with opportunities to develop and practice skills through experiential activities and case study examples.

Attendance at this workshop is necessary as a prerequisite for the two-day Discrimination and Harassment Grievance Adviser training.

Discrimination and Harassment Grievance Adviser Training

Discrimination and Harassment Grievance Advisers are staff appointed under the Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Grievance Procedures by the relevant Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Their role is to provide information and support in confidence to staff or students who perceive that they may have experienced sexual harassment or discrimination or who believe such an allegation may be made against them.

Advisers must be able to:

  • Listen seriously and impartially to the concerns and perceptions of a staff member or student seeking their advice;
  • Explain the University's policy and procedures;
  • Explore possible options for resolving the problem;
  • Make referrals to other sources of help;
  • Provide support until the matter is resolved.

This two day training is designed for intending advisers and staff members wanting to increase their skills in handling sensitive and challenging interpersonal situations. Workshops are highly interactive.

If you are interested in this training:

  1. Enrol in the Adviser Training Workshop by completing the Enrolment Form (doc 171kb) and returning to Leah Zaks at the Equity and Diversity Centre, Building 55 Clayton campus. Forms addressed to Leah Zaks can be faxed to (03) 9902-0254 or emailed;
  2. Complete the EO Online training, and 
  3. Enrol in one of the prerequisite "Advanced Equal Opportunity Training: From Theory to Practice" workshops for staff or managers.

This workshop is open to staff who are interested in appointment as Advisers and to those who would find the skills and knowledge helpful in their present roles.

Peninsula campus workshops: Monday 7 June and Monday 14 June
Clayton campus workshops: Wednesday 3 November
and Wednesday 10 November
