Overview
To understand the unique nature of the Web as a publishing medium and to provide a set of strategies for writing specifically for the Web. This excludes courseware supporting the academic teaching and learning function.
Intended Outcomes
Participants will understand how users interact with the web and develop strategies to ensure the web content meets their objectives.
Course Content
On completion of this course participants will be able to:
- appreciate the key differences between publishing online and in print from a publisher's perspective
- understand how people interact with content on the web and how this differs to from reading content in print format
- know how to identify and/or set goals for your web content
- be aware of techniques to help identify and understand the needs of the users of your web content
- have a greater appreciation of the need to write in plain English
- be able to apply some simple by highly effective strategies for writing content for the web
- be aware of techniques for dealing with longer content published on the web
Learning Approach
- Hands-on workshop
- Practice exercises
Participants are asked to bring the following documentation to the workshop:
- 3-6 pages of content printed from your department/faculty website (These pages should not be navigation pages ie. home pages or section home pages, but pages with content).
- 1 or 2 examples of very long content pages (preferably from your own website)
Handouts
A booklet of notes will be provided.
