Overview

This program is designed to provide academic performance development supervisors with a sound working knowledge of conducting performance conversations in the workplace, and discusses the various techniques and strategies that could be utilised to manage unsatisfactory performance.

Intended Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program academic performance supervisors will:

  • understand the importance of having regular performance conversations in helping staff to reach performance and career goals;
  • be able to apply giving positive and corrective feedback mechanisms to formal and informal conversations with staff;
  • have an understanding of performance coaching and performance couselling
  • be able to confidently approach difficult performance conversations.

Course Content

Information includes:

  • preparing for positive and corrective feedback
  • dealing with difficult conversations about under performance
  • equity and fairness in discussing performance
  • having more ‘emotionally literate' conversations
  • phrasing feedback
  • performance coaching and performance counselling skills
  • enduring performance difficulties
  • working with very difficult workplace behaviours and
  • what to do when feedback fails and
  • who to go to for help on dealing with performance gaps

Learning Approach

The program will follow the format of group discussion, case studies and role plays, supported by a Workplace Relations Consultant.
