Content guidelines and faculty editor resources

    Miscellaneous topics

    Topics below include:

    • Non-Monash unit codes

    • Ordered vs unordered list formats

    • Requesting updates after publication

    • Tables and course maps

    • URL format

    • Using heading level indicators in CUPID

    Non-Monash unit codes

Unit codes are autolinked in the Handbook. In order to prevent the web 'system' trying to auto-link non-Monash unit codes (ie those that do not have a hyphen in them), a space MUST be introduced artificially into the non-Monash code, eg Open learning units BMS11 Business mathematics and statistics; ECO11 Microeconomics must be written into CUPID as BMS 11 and ECO 11.

    Ordered vs unordered list formats

    Ordered lists - (a.), (b.) (i.), (ii.) - are only used:

    • where the items follow in a sequence

    • for long complex course structure/requirements statements

    • when a list contains items that have dependent bullet points.

Otherwise unordered lists (bullet points) should be used (indicated in CUPID by using the '+' symbol).

NOTE: Only one level of bullet points is possible; 'nested' lists should be structured as ordered lists as above.

    CUPID access

During the Handbook editing phase it will be necessary for faculty editors to not be making updates at certain times when the Handbook coordinator is editing their faculty's entries. This is to prevent accidental overwriting of faculty changes.

At the point of publication, the Handbook reflects exactly the data in CUPID, including all faculty-approved edits made up to that point. CUPID remains closed for a period of time (usually approx. one week) beyond the publication date in case additional CUPID extracts are required.

CUPID thereafter re-opens to faculties for entry of course and 'Areas of study' publication data until the end of July the next year for the next publication.

    Requesting updates after publication*

Information in the Handbook will not be updated after publication other than in exceptional circumstances, excepting that typographical errors, contact details and any other text which does not affect the 'requirements' of a course - ie Course structure, Course requirements or assessment information etc - can be corrected or updated at any time, on approval of the relevant faculty editor and the Handbook coordinator.

Alterations to Course structure, Course requirements or other 'contractual' information will be tracked in a public change register in the Handbook maintaind by the Handbook coordinator. Change requests that meet the above conditions are submitted via Word document and update request email.

    * For courses and areas of study only. For units visit the CUPID website.

    Tables and course maps

Course maps and tables will not be included in course, area of study or unit entries in the Handbook. 'Table-like' information can be expressed as bullet point lists. Where faculties wish to provide course maps and tables, these can be referred to by a hyperlink and published on faculty websites.

    URL format

URLs are to be entered into CUPID in full including the prefix "http://". This is necessary to facilitate automatic hotlinking of URLs on the web pages. This format is also used to ensure URLs are visible in full in the print version of the Handbook, which is generated from the web pages. A meaningful print version is a Federal Government requirement under the HESA Act.

The Handbook does not support the use of 'Course Finder-like' hot links, ie DO NOT use this style of hot-linking: [[http://www.buseco.monash.edu.au/about/campuses/index.html][Business and Economics]].

Using heading level indicators in CUPID

These are only relevant to course and areas of study entries.
