Breast feeding policy

For use by all University staff

Policy statement and broad overview

Monash University acknowledges the importance of breastfeeding for both mother and baby and supports those staff members who continue to breastfeed on their return from maternity leave. This policy is based on the following principles, which should be adhered to by all those responsible for the implementation of this policy and to whom this policy applies:

  • Monash University recognises the important role of women in all its operations and seeks to provide policy and services that support their continuing employment
  • Monash University supports staff with family responsibilities
  • Monash University promotes equal opportunity and global principles of equity in employment
Policy Details
  1. A mother on return from Maternity Leave who is breastfeeding may seek flexible work arrangements by contacting her supervisor. The supervisor will seek to strike a balance between the operational objectives and requirements of the work unit and the needs of the returning mother.
  2. The University will, where practicable, provide access to suitable facilities to breastfeed and/or express and store breast milk. This may include facilities with a power point, lockable door, chair, nappy change area, hand-washing facilities, refrigerator and breast pump storage area.
  3. The University will provide reasonable flexibility for mothers to take paid lactation breaks during their workday.
  4. Information about this policy and its application will be available from the Equity and Diversity Centre upon request.
Operative date policy authorization

Operative from the first full pay period to commence 16/09/2002. This policy was authorised by the Divisional Director, Human Resources Division

State and Commonwealth legislation prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, pregnancy, parental status or status as a carer, age, impairment/imputed impairment, industrial activity, lawful sexual activity, marital status, physical features, political belief or activity, race and religious belief or activity.
