Pre-natal leave policy

Policy statement and broad overview

Monash University will support those staff members who are pregnant or whose partners are pregnant by allowing these staff time off work to attend regular pre-natal visits to the doctor in preparation for the birth of a child. This policy is based on the following principles, which should be adhered to by all those responsible for the implementation of this policy and to whom this policy applies:

  • Monash University supports staff with family responsibilities
  • Monash University acknowledges the importance of good pre-natal health for mother and baby
  • Monash University promotes equal opportunity and global principles of equity in employment

Policy details

  1. In preparation for the birth of a child and upon production of a medical certificate, Monash University will allow leave, which is additional to existing paid leave entitlements, for the staff member to attend regular pre-natal visits to the doctor.  Staff who seek such leave are required to provide at least 7 days notice of their intention to take pre-natal leave.  The supervisor will approve the application for leave if the supervisor is satisfied that work and operational requirements can be satisfied.
  2. Information about this policy and its application will be available from the Equity and Diversity Centre upon request.
  3. Staff are required to complete an Application For Leave form obtained from Human Resources with supplementary documentation attached or staff may apply online using Monash Employee Self Service (ESS).
